80% Less Space Required With Dynamic Racking

Presentation of The Client

The Novatech Group has been a Quebec manufacturer of doors and windows for over 30 years. It has 13 plants across Canada, the United States and Europe and its products are distributed internationally. The company is a GOLD 2020 category winner of Canada's Best Managed Companies.

Why dynamic racking ?

The volume of doors manufactured at the Sainte-Julie plant has increased considerably, mainly due to exports to the European market. In order to meet demand, the Québec manufacturer had to increase its production and, consequently, its storage space. Since the various sectors of the company do not all have the same criteria in terms of storage, and since a square foot is worth its weight in gold, the choice of racking types was crucial. To meet their storage needs, the plant engineer contacted MSK Canada's team of warehouse design and layout specialists, knowing that they would provide him with a turnkey project.

Solution: dynamic racking

MSK Canada installed racking for three separate areas. In the first zone, a quadruple depth pallet flow racking system in LIFO (last in/first out) was installed, allowing for the creation of 240 pallet positions in 1730 square feet instead of 8512 square feet in traditional racking.

In the second zone, free of architectural constraints, a five-fold depth pallet flow racking system in FIFO (first in/first out) has been integrated. The cells have all been set to the same width and the rollers positioned to accommodate the two pallet sizes that the company uses in the same racking. This created 80 pallet positions in 592 square feet instead of 2480 square feet.

Finally, in the last area, a conventional single-deep racking with 152 pallet positions was used, as it has to accommodate several different models (SKU), thus requiring a larger facing.

Final Situation: the impact of dynamic racking.

Thanks to the installation of dynamic pallet flow racking, the company required almost 80% less floor space compared to the use of conventional racking. In the end, the new storage system can store 472 pallet positions.
