What might seem like a superficial expense will actually be your best investment.

1- Increased luminosity

It’s no rocket science that improving visibility in the bay will increase the efficiency and the precision of the work. While it’s obvious that properly lighting the vehicle you're working on will dramatically improve effectiveness, the effect of a properly lit workbench or toolbox is often . It’s been observed that techs are more inclined to do dismantling jobs on the actual workbench when it’s well lit and free of clutter compared to doing it on the floor next to the car - a method that leads to a non-ergonomic position, poor effectiveness and lost parts. It’s more embarrassing to work in a messy tool box with its bright and well lit.

2- Improved ergonomics

By offering an ergonomic working space to your technicians, you make sure that each of their actions are efficient and will not lead, in time, to work related pains causing unproductive downtime and insurance claims. Here are a few examples:

WIDTH: A proper workbench should offer at least a 60” wide working area per tech. This can be adjusted according to the available space and budget. Allowing sufficient space per tech will ensure efficient dismantling/cleaning of larger parts as well as enough space for paperwork of parts research.

HEIGHT - WORK SURFACE: According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) the best work surface height for heavy work should be between 28” and 35” high. While most workbench manufacturers offer a working height that matches these specs, some supplier offers heavy-duty levelling feet to adjust the height with precision. These adjustments should be fast and simple.

3- Improved productivity:

Drawers compartments allow organization of tools and parts, following the 5 S methodology. It brings products closer to operations and workers while improving the organization. In fact, the compartments help to eliminate wasted time and space and to raise work productivity, resulting in lower costs and higher efficiency.

4- Lower accident hazards

When everything has its place, chances of knocking or tripping over part or equipment lying around are dramatically lowered. Offering a storage area for the technicians’ hand tools is only the beginning. Special tools, alignment equipment, fluid containers, mobile oil drain, compressors should all be stored away in a specific place for easy access but also to avoid clutter in your fast-moving service department floor.

5- Standardized the performance of every Techs.

With your own tool and storage space, there are no more excuses. Standardization in production methods increases both productivity and efficiency in a manufacturing environment by improving quality and by reducing research time. Standardization also makes it less likely that problems result from human error and, when they do, can lead you to the source of the problems more quickly. Moreover, the standardization increase the mobility of the Techs. They are now able to work in any place of the shop since every workbench is the same.

6- Employee Retention & Attraction

Employee retention is crucial to the long-term health and success of your business. The hiring process cost time...and money. Losing a technician creates downtime and lost productivity (fewer staff, added training, effect on the team’s attitude, lost knowledge).

A global study confirmed a positive connection between employee engagement and workplace satisfaction. A pleasant, organized, safe and comfortable workplace is likely to positively impact on your technicians' morale.  If they are able to enjoy a clean and comfortable workspace, it is probable that productivity and focus will improve and they are more likely to enjoy coming to work. So, the look of the works place will influence and help the hiring process.

The workbenches usually create the impression of cleanliness and modernity while ensuring unity of the workplace. Visitors, technicians or future employees will see a nice and welcoming workplace at a glance. New graduates will no longer need to supply their own tool box and they will be instantly hirable and efficient. Moreover, they will surely want to work for you as they don’t have to buy their own tool box. Finally, experienced mechanics won't need to damage or overuse their own, expensive toolbox as it is in many workshops.
